Criteria for selecting electrical submersible pumps (ESP) for oil production from Middle Miocene reservoirs in the Cuu Long basin
Abstract
The paper analyzes the technical criteria for selecting and designing Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP) systems to optimize production rates, enhance recovery factors, and ensure economic efficiency for oilfields in the Cuu Long basin. The authors propose a comprehensive ESP selection workflow that integrates key criteria related to well conditions, fluid properties, equipment specifications, operating parameters, and overall economic performance.
To overcome the specific geological and operational challenges of the Cuu Long basin, the study presents detailed recommendations on equipment configuration - including gas separators, wear-resistant materials, and high-temperature motors - as well as operational strategies such as the application of Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) to adjust pump frequency and maintain optimal performance. The outcomes of this study provide a scientific and practical basis for designing reliable, efficient production systems, thereby contributing to the effective and sustainable production of the Middle Miocene reservoirs in the Cuu Long basin.
